The idea of starting a Barbados association had been raised for quite sometime with Barbadians who migrated to Edmonton, Alberta. The purpose of the association was to assist West Indians in Edmonton, lend support to other associations and to support worthy causes in Barbados, while providing a means of bringing Barbadians together in Edmonton for social and cultural events.

The association was named "The Barbados – Canadian Association of Edmonton" and continues to function as a non- profit organization assisting Canadians and West Indians alike.
